ahwt Posts: 2334 Registered: Mar 2003	posted 04-17-2019 02:11 AM Here are several silver wine bottle coasters. The one with the smallest height is by Matthew Boulton and is in Old Sheffield Plate while the two with taller sides are unmarked and are silver plated. The design of these two suggests that they were done by Barker-Ellis as I have seen others with this design having their mark. It is hard to date these items, but I think the OSP one is before 1840 simply because silver electroplating started about 1840 and was cheaper to do than Old Sheffield Plate. I think the switch over to electroplating was very rapid. The taller ones I suspect are late 1800s when designs became bolder and we were in the gilded age. IP: Logged

When the war started he worried that the silver might be delayed so he ordered more from France as a backup. IP: Logged
