This information is from a book entitled “The Silver and Sheffield Plate Collector” by W.A. Young and is a list of Old Sheffield Plate “devices” and the makers associated with these marks. I do not recall seeing makers marks referred to as devices, but it is a pleasant way of labeling the function of the symbols. This book is not dated, but I think it originally was published in the early 1900 and has been reprinted several times. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 03-16-2020).] IP: Logged |

This book, published in 1919, is in public domain and has been available on google books for a while - I check occasionally, since a few old silver books show up as their copyrights expire... ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

Thanks Cheryl for that information. While staying inside I have been going through some books that I brought many years ago. Another interesting book is Old Plate Ecclesiastical, Decorative, and Domestic It’s Makers and Marks by J H Buck. This book was published by The Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1888. Gorham was not only a premier silver manufacturer at this time, they also had a serious interest in documenting parts of the silver industry. It is fascinating to see what someone in 1888 thought was important. IP: Logged |
