I mostly collect modernist/contemporary but can't resist a great engraving. This tray is some kind of commemorative piece from the 1883 opening of the Brooklyn Bridge. Since buying it I have spent quite a bit of time studying and admiring all of the fine detail.

I found this at a flea market and was surprised when I turned it over to find it marked as quadruple plate by Simpson, Hall, Miller & Co. I can't imagine splurging on such intense engraving and then skimping on the tray itself (it's good quality silverplate, to be sure, and it has held up very nicely). Maybe the engraving ate up all the funds on this purchase. The tray might have been a stock item from SHM&Co and the engraving done locally in NYC.

There are no personalizations of any kind. It seems a little elaborate for an ordinary souvenir, so perhaps they were given to certain officials, members of an organization, etc.

8 1/2" x 6 1/2".

What a great tray. Your thought that is was a stock tray locally engraved is interesting.

It is also interesting that George Washington's likeness was put on the tray. Washington's dominance in the thoughts of most Americans was still alive in those days.

Wonderful find.

The following might lead to more info/research.

The first presidential mansion occupied by Washington was torn down to make way for the Brooklyn Bridge. There is a plaque under Brooklyn Bridge:
