Hello members, Today it's the first day that I can ask some information about silver work from Norway. The questions goes about two pieces one from (engraved)1798, it's a silver spoon at the backside it's marked with three stamps. One crowned cross, the letter M, and the letters LK. The length is about 9 inches and it's weight about 40 gramme. Steel is 5.6 inches and the bowl is 3 inches long by 1.7 inches width. The other spoon the end of the steel is not complete but two stamps are the letter H and the other mark is the figure 20. I hope someone can give me any information, thanks for reading and hopefully some reaction. With thanks from andrew (silverhunter). IP: Logged |

Velkommen Silverhunter. I know a only little about Norwegian silver, but there are some people on the forum who are very knowledgable. I look forward to your participation and I hope to learn more along with you. It is important to include clear photographs when asking questions. A photo of the overall object, plus a close up photo of the Kimo [This message has been edited by Kimo (edited 07-20-2007).] IP: Logged |

Hello Kimo, Thanks for your fast reaction, since a short while I own a view silver works from Norway. I can tell you that information is hard to find in library (in the Netherlands) but at some websites I found already any information about some silversmiths from Bergen(Norway) and J.Tostrup(Oslo). Some names that I could found in relation with the marks are from Theodor Olsen, Brodrene Lohne (Lo), M.Olsen, Marius Hammer(MH), A.Schultz (AS?)from Helsingor, M.Aase (Magnus Aase),(TO) mark? The mark TO and can't find till now, and information about M.Olsen(perhaps family from Theodor Olsen. I know that there are still two families still makes their silver work in Bergen and they are Theodor Olsen/Aase and Brodrene Lohne. In which silver work are you interested and are you live in Scandinavian, my city is near Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Greetings and thank you again for your reaction, good weekend! IP: Logged |

Thank you for you advise, but in a short time I've found a lot of material on the internet. Only a few silversmiths or marks are missing. I try to write a little book about norwegian silverwork (only about the collected things) and for own use. But I'm glad with any suggestion or information, so thank you again. One of the good information I found was at European Silver Quality Markings it tells about european silver quality markings. So I try to find information. Next time I send a photo with my request about the silver spoon. My son is a computer freak so he can explain for to send photos at the forum, next time. For instance I didn't have found the jugendstil? decoration which is used at dessert spoons made by Brodrene Lohne(from Bergen), so next time I will asked this. Thank you for your reaction again, greetings IP: Logged |

Hello Silverhunter. There are many good books to learn about the silver from Norway. If you are going to collect silver from there you should start to build your own reference library since the information you can find on the internet is incomplete. One good book that you might want for the first one in your personal library is "International Hallmarks on Silver" by Tardy. It is available in either English or French and it is perhaps the best general reference book for European silver markings. Another good reference book for Norwegian silver would be "Norsk bestikk i sølv - og plett". This is only for spoons, knives, and forks, but it includes many photos of Norwegian silver maker marks and it tells you the pattern names for these. It is written in Norwegian Another good reference book written in Norwegian is "Norske solvstempler: Gullsmedhandverk i byene pa Ostlandet for 1870". This one is only for older Norwegian silver -made before 1870. There are many others also. Unfortunately, they are all expensive so you should ask your library to borrow one for you through interlibrary loan from another library so you can decide whether you want to invest in one or more of them. Kimo To answer your question as to whether I am from one of the Scandinavian countries the answer is no - I am from America. My mother's family is from Jönköping in Sweden, however, and Sweden and Norway have had a long historical connection. IP: Logged |

Kimo, I thank you for your advises, perhaps in the future I can buy one of these titles, like you described in your message? Perhaps I can find also information in the head library in Rotterdam. I can ask if the library can borrow one of the book title names you mentioned.(good idea. One of the spoons about which I've asked for information at this forum, a member called Blakstone gave me good information about it. There are a few questions I want to ask at the forum, but at first I've to make some pictures to correspond with the subjects. A lot of time I read the questions of members at this forum, but there are only a few questions about Scandinavian silver work, but I hope in the future to be able to answer once. All the interesting information from internet I keep in a special map called: Greetings from silverhunter, if there are any Norwegian silver work developments I let you know!!!!! IP: Logged |

Hi Silverhunter. Let me teach you a secret about your computer. If you do not have a ø on your computer keyboard, you can make your computer create this letter by doing the following:
For example, you can make the letter ü by holding the ALT key while typing 0252 on the number pad then releasing the ALT key. Or the letter å by holding the ALT key and typing 134 on the number pad and releasing the ALT key. Kimo IP: Logged |

Scott Martin, Thank you for all this material, I will try but are not sure to be ready by evening? Perhaps another keyboard will bring a solution if I tried some of these figures, and the result stays negative. So my day is filled with experiments on this side. I also have to make some new photos for new subjects for this forum so time flies. Greetings from silverhunter. My compliments for your forum! IP: Logged |

Greetings, silverhunter - If you have a Macintosh computer, the "Alt key" technique will not work, at least with Microsoft Word. But you can set up a shortcut to insert special characters such as the ø. Look for the steps in "Help." Good luck! witzhall IP: Logged |

Hello Witzhall and also Kimo, Thanks a lot for giving all that information, but after a few tries, in case some numbers of the Alt.... list, it didn't work. This afternoon I've tried another keyboard and everything is now functioning. It's good to answer in everyone's language but it's the best for all, when I try to write English versions. Greetings from silverhunter, now it's time to make some photographs, thanks! IP: Logged |

My old PC had Windows ME and the Alt key (ANSI character code) method worked fine, my laptop with Windows XP will not accept the codes, but if you go to the START menu, hit All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map, there are all sorts of symbols and foreign letters with a simplified copy/paste system. (I keep a shortcut to the map.) ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

Dragonflywink, Thanks for advise from your side, I'm now full loaded with good advises. Yesterday I've read a interesting conversation of you with member Blakstone and member Argentum. The subject was Norwegian silver spoon with M.Aase stamp.(april 2005). I've some silverware from M.Olsen my question is what kind of relation is he with Theodor Olsen? At most of the silver pieces(spoons and forks)is the decoration nice (personal opinion of course!)but is this art deco or art nouveau decoration? I did not find the decoration on other silver pieces found on the internet. Member Kimo advised me to buy a special book about Norwegian silverware and I will do that in future. I hope that you can help me or another member if he/she read this question from my side. Greetings Silverhunter.
