[26-1558] I bought this Fairy Lamp centerpiece from England and the only ID is a number stamped on the underside of one of the rings. Can anyone id this?

I looked in "The Elegant Epergne from the Bunny and Charles Koppelman Collection", which pictures some epergnes similar but not identical, I think you are better off to ask a glass circle - a factory number is really not enough to go on to determine what silverplate company has made frame. Welcome to the forums, it is usual here to explain your interest because most posters are in the forums to increase knowledge on things concerning silver, history, makers, marks etc. Having said that perhaps you could make an image of any other marks on your handsome lamp, otherwise it is not easy to talk about it. Try a search here and on other sites for the same type of lamp too. Looking forward to more info. IP: Logged |

Thank you for your comments. I sent a picture to my fairy lamp club forum and also to Towle silver company. The I might be a T. There are no other marks on this piece. I do know that many European companies (during Victorian era) would have American companies create silver overlay work for their glass pieces, so maybe it is possible the glass is European and the silver centerpiece is American. When I find out more about it I will be sure to share my information with the forum. IP: Logged |

Happy New Year I do not know who made the frame but your glass is Nailsea and was made by American, English and Continental glass houses around 1880. As with other antique items caution is suggested as Nailsea glass fairy lamps are being reproduced. Fortunately these are not the best quality. Nice looking lamp. IP: Logged |

Hi argentum1, Yes, I know that the glass is Nailsea as I have a fair amount of knowledge of victorian glass. I'm trying to learn more about the frame. But since you brought up the domes, I believe my shades to be authentic, but I'm unclear if you are implying that you thought they where poor quality or reproductions. I'm interested in any information you have on this as I have not found much on rating the desirability of Nailsea. What are desirable qualities to look for? I appreciate any information you can share on this subject as I'm always looking to learn more about antique glass. ------------------ IP: Logged |

I apologize if my entry appeared to suggest that yours were fake. I was only stating that once an item is collected and/or goes up in price one can be sure the fakers will follow. I left collecting glass as I am a real klutz and have broken more than a few items. My passions have always been with early American silver and original finish pre-1830 furniture especially paint decorated. I never followed the trends but always collected what I admired so what makes an item desirable to me may not follow with others. I can not help with the stand but wish you good fortune in tracking down the marks. IP: Logged |
