[26-1610] Hi, I found this dog in a box of thing I inherited late last year, I have seen a another one very much like it, it is listed on the internet but it says it is silver, I would like to know its Age, Who Made it and should it be cleaned? And could anybody tell me would I be able to have the legs relind. I have always been interested in silver I think it is better looking than gold. At a young age I collected proof silver coin and I'm very interested in Newcastle silver Could anyone tell me anything about a WMF great Dane sculpture on its paw there is a mark WMF.B & a.s I found this dog in a box of things I inherited late last year, I have seen a another one very much like it, it is listed on the internet but it says it is silver. I believe WMF.B is used by WMF when plating on Britannia-metal. IP: Logged |

Yes, this is not silver, it is silver colored metal. The WMF.B means that it was made by the Württembergische Metallwarenfabrikthe and that they made it by casting the dog in a white base metal called Britannia metal which is an alloy made mostly of tin with some copper and antimony melted in. There is no silver in Britannia metal. The AS marking stands for Alpacca Silber which is a different alloy from Britannia metal and would have been used to plate the Britannia metal figure to make it extra shiny and looking like real silver. Alpacca Silber or Alpaca Silver in English likewise has no actual silver in it. It is an alloy mainly of nickel and copper. Because this is base metal it would be very difficult or impossible to realign the legs and paws. Trying to bending this kind of cast base metal usually results in breaking rather than bending them back to their original alignment. You might find someone willing to give it a try but they would have to heat the metal and be really, really careful not to melt it since the melting point is not very high. And they would likely wind up simply breaking the legs off anyway. My recommendation is to simply enjoy it as it is and consider the bent legs to be a sign of its age, patina, and history.
