I am trying to gather more info on some 19-century sterling flatware, which has "E. A. Tyler" on it as its only identifying mark. E.A. Tyler was a silver/jewelry company in New Orleans, LA. According to American Silver Marks, the Online Encyclopedia of Silver Marks, Hallmarks & Makers' Marks, Edward A. Tyler (presumably E. A. Tyler b. 1815 - d. 1879) was a silversmith active in New Orleans, LA between 1838 - 1879 whose maker's mark was E. A. Tyler iside of a rectangle. I found photographs of this business, which I know from their contents pre-date 1900 and some more specifically pre-date 1874. The address was 115 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA. This was in a building located at the intersection of Canal and Royal Streets. The photos all show the statue of Henry Clay in the middle of Canal Street in front of this business. (This statue was removed from Canal Street in 1900.

Welcome to the SMP forums - a loose group of people who like and are interested in silver work of all varieties. You'll find that if you follow the guidelines at the top of the intro page "Please Read Before You Post", it suggests that you introduce yourself, your interest, and why you're looking for the information. By doing that, you'll usually find help a bit more readily. And without photos, identification of objects and their background is very problematic. We all see and describe things in our own way. The photos put us on common ground. Good luck. IP: Logged |
