I own an official replica of a 1903 Ford, Model A motorcar, made in silver with gold, diamond, and ruby embellishments. It was made in 1978 by the 'American Silversmiths Guild Inc.' of New Jersey for Cartier. It is 13 inches long, 9 wide, and 7 inches high, and weighs 7.5 lbs. Only 500 of these were made. I was wondering if any of the other 499 have survived, if they are in private or public collections, and if this item appears in any books or records of the Silversmith's art? Can anyone enlighten me?

No reason to yell (all upper case is considered yelling on the internet).

Please let us know what is unclear in the yellow box. It would be most helpful to you if you provided some more info about yourself, your interest in silver and what is motivating your inquiry about this object.

  • Tell us the Why of your question
We're not being snoopy; knowing will help us help you:
What is your interest in silver?
What is it that you hope to learn from this question?
What is your purpose in asking?

Also posting a photo is helpful and will make your post more interesting. Be sure to include any maker marks.

  • Post a picture
It's not hard and will go a long way to getting an accurate answer.
Everything you need to know can be found in How to Post Photos (click here).
If you can't take a picture, try a drawing.

Hi Pam.

We really are a nice bunch of folks here who are happy to chat about silver with everyone who shares in this interest, but in the same way as if you went to a friend's house and met a new group of people there - it is nice to introduce yourself a bit. The part about including a photo is for two reasons - it lets everyone in the forum share in your joy of the craftsmanship of your silver model; and, it enables people to provide an informed response since there are so many markings are similar and there is much that can be determined by looking at the quality and style of craftsmanship. Without a photo it is quite difficult to give an any answers that make much sense.

Instructions for posting photos are included in the guidelines. If you need any help please just ask.

As I am an antique car fan, and have been for a number of years, I remember the advertisements for that Ford model when new in some magazines of the hobby. That would have to be a real prized possession.

Also, are I think you may have some incorrect information about the number of these that were made. A quick search on the web turns up several of these were the number made is consistently quoted as 1,708 of them which seems to be more consistent with the kinds of numbers for recently created instant collectables.

Kimo, I believe that number you quote is correct and that that number is the production number for the first Model A Ford. They made as many replicas as real cars that were made in 1903. They were for the purpose of celebrating Ford's 75th anniversary.
