Can anybody give me any information on Anti-tarnish strips? I have just started to use them in my display cabinet and also in the closed plastic storage containers where I keep some of my silver items. I am wondering: - Are they effective? - Do they really not alter chemically the surface (or the appearance) of the silver? The strips have been available for some time now and I wondered if anyone had any experience of using them. [This message has been edited by wessex96 (edited 03-27-2009).] IP: Logged |

The 3M strips are effective according to my niece. She has some silver flatware and keeps it in a silver chest along with an anti tarnish 3M strip. I personally hane no experience with them. IP: Logged |

The way they seem to work is by strongly attracting the chlorine and sulfur in the air so it will go to the strips and not to the silver. Chlorine and sulfur in the air are what react with silver to form silver chloride and or silver sulfide which are commonly known as tarnish. While silver strips and pacific cloth help to reduce the rate of tarnish, the first step one should take is to keep your silver away from obvious sources of chorine and sulfur around the house. For example, store your silver away from the kitchen or any foods that may have salt in them (most everything that is salted or salty has chlorine in it), or that have sulfur in them (such as eggs). Keep it away from any source of natural gas such as a stove or heater if your house uses natural gas for energy (natural gas has sulfur in it). Keep it away from any rubber such as mats or elastic bands (most rubber objects have sulfur in them). Once you have your silver away from such sources of chlorine and sulfur your strips or pacific cloth has a chance of doing what they are designed to do - reduce the rate of tarnish. Without having much of a scientific background, it looked to me like the pacific cloth would do the most good even with a small amount of humidity. Apparently, if the conditions exist to produce tarnish, as they normally do, the silver in the cloth is sacrificed for the sake of the silver that is being protected. IP: Logged |

Thanks all for your comments and the advice. I have not come across pacific cloth for sale in the UK, but will certainly look out for it. IP: Logged |

You can buy Pacific cloth by the yard on many internet websites. It looks and feels like brown felt. There is another equivalent product made by Hagerty that I believe they call SilverCloth and that you can also buy by the yard on many internet sites. Their offering looks and feels like royal blue felt. If you have even the slightest sewing skills, or have family or a friend who does, buying one of these kinds of cloth by the yard is definitely the way to go. There are companies that sell ready-made bags made of this cloth but for the prices they charge for just one of them you could buy 2 or 3 yards of cloth and make a whole pile of bags for yourself.
