I need some assistance identifying the marks on this spoon. I am also wondering what type of spoon this would be - perhaps a condiment spoon? It is 5 ¼” in length and the bowl is 1 ¼” wide. I would appreciate any help.

The profile depicts George Washington. This is the trademark of the Mt Vernon Company of Mt Vernon, NY. The other mark appears to be a copyright symbol. Perhaps this is a bouillon spoon. IP: Logged |

Thanks, Paul - this is most helpful. I know that this spoon was handed down through my family, but I do not know any details. Since the Mt Vernon Co was formed in 1914, this at least gives me a "terminus a quo" and since it was absorbed by Gorham in 1923, perhaps also a "terminus ad quem"! I do not know whether when one company is absorbed into another, the marks continue into use afterwards or not, though. IP: Logged |

Marks are commonly used by absorbing companies for many years after they buy out an original company. It allows them to have a broader market presence. You see this in glassware also. IP: Logged |

When did the copyright symbol come into common use? IP: Logged |
