[26-2093] Hello everyone. I am so glad I found this forum. During the holidays, I inherited a collection of silver and plate. My aunt had a bag of spoons that she was going to sell as scrap and I grabbed them 'cos they looked really, really old to me. These spoons might be coin (although not marked as such(?)) with markings of:
I will post pics as soon as I get to a server. IP: Logged |

Hi SD Yes - absolutely - you have some nice coin silver spoons by some well known and well represented makers (with the Arnzen being a little scarcer). With the exception of Arnzen, all are from the MA area, with the Dodge likely MA or RI. There is an excellent genealogy website that lists many of your makers, and their family lineage, but I am not sure if it is allowable to post the address. Maybe one of the moderators can let us know. Good luck in your research. IP: Logged |

Hi, SilverDiva-- If you look at the top of the page, you will see a box in yellow that says "Please Read Before You Post," asking you to explain your interest in silver. This forum is not a place for researching silver you mean to sell. But if your family is planning to keep the silver and wants to know more about it, members will be happy to help you. So please do read that yellow box and the Guidelines. If you follow the guidelines, you will find the members friendly and happy to share their expertise. IP: Logged |

Thanks flabob for your quick reply and good info. P - my question is of pure interest from a collector of early Americana. Sorry that you had to question my intentions. IP: Logged |

Thank you, SilverDiva. I'm sorry if it sounded as if I was accusing you of nefarious intentions. It's just that many, many first-time posters haven't read the guidelines. Now that you've stated your good intentions explicitly, members will feel comfortable helping you out. Good job saving those pieces of American and family history from the smelting pot! IP: Logged |

Hey Polly- no problem. I can only imagine the 'hit and runs' you must get on this forum. Wev - thanks for the info. I cannot believe the research! I find this particularly interesting because some of my 'roots' are from Boston, MA. Even found an American Silversmith with my last name... hmmmm... When my aunt presented this bag of 'scrap metal' spoons, I said whoa!!! wait a minute - there's history in there and I became the proud owner of these coin silver spoons. Thanks everybody for the info. Am waiting for my camera before I can present some shots of some of the spoons. IP: Logged |
