[26-2124] Aloha from Hawaii. My family on my father's side traces their roots back to New York during per-revolutionary times, and we have a number of historical documents that have been passed down. One document is an enlistment for Cary Dunn in the New York Militia in 1762.
After doing some research online, the only Cary Dunn that I could find reference to in that time period is a silversmith. Is it possible that this is the person that my document refers to? The time period and location fits, but I'm not sure how common the name was. Thanks for any help. S. Dunn IP: Logged |

I believe that's the one, the mark was originally how I found this website. I'm guessing if it is him it would have to be the older one since I don't think a 3 year old would be joining the New York Militia. Unfortunately I don't have any other documents related to him or any pieces with his mark that have been passed down to really solidify my belief so I'm trying to see if there is a record of Cary Dunn the Silversmith being a member of the New York Militia or any detailed biographical information about him. If it is the same person I think it would be awesome to track down a piece that he made someday to reconnect to my past. IP: Logged |

Speaking solely for myself, there is no doubt that the New York City soldier and silversmith Cary Dunn were both the same people. A selected record from the National Archives Microfilm Publications which would have to be for Cary Dunn Jr: You may also find it interesting to note that Lord Stirling became one of George IP: Logged |

It sounds like the senior could be the soldier, but so far I do not see the proof. I have done some of my family history and the two things I have learned are to always resist a temptation to draw a conclusion without a clear fact; and, to always take historical records with a very large grain of salt as many are inaccurate. If it were me I would make the senior the soldier as a working hypothesis and try to find a record somewhere that would provide clear proof one way or the other. Aloha nui loa, IP: Logged |

Thank you everyone for your replies. As of right now I'm cautiously optimistic that the person in my document and the silversmith are one in the same, but I think I need to continue searching for more information to back this up. If I do find anymore information I'll be sure to post updates on this forum. IP: Logged |

There are more documents that mention Cary Dunn the silver/goldsmith, his wife Ann, and his son Cary Dunn on the New-York Historical Society website. But many of them are hard to search electronically because they have zillions of OCR scanning errors. You might try poking around among the documents there. Also try Google's book search (if you haven't already). IP: Logged |
