Hello! Here's a wicked little spoon that I have and am having trouble with the maker's mark. I've found lots of H&H makers, yet can't find this exact one that has the three characters stamped individually (not in individual circles or one big circle or an oval ring, etc.). In the photo, the first mark states "sterling" then "925/1000" then a 5 leaf clover-looking mark then the initials. If anyone knows, I'd be much obliged! Starr

Hamilton and Hamilton in Providence Rhode Island. They were active from the early 1880s to the early 1920s (I think the start and end dates are a little vague)doing both manufacturing and retailing of silver. It is also possible that whoever bought them out could have continued to use their dies and markings afterwards as that sort of thing tends to happen. What is the size of this spoon? Is it a salt spoon or something larger? It looks quite fragile so it may have been intended for something not very vigorous or even just for display. I think you're right, I just researched it after reading your message. The measurement up to the tip of the sword is 4 1/2" (demitasse size), so it is fragile. I NEVER use any of my spoons, or any of my colletion of flatware for that matter, so I'm not concerned about bending or breaking them, but I'm really careful with them at the same time. Thank you so much for your response! IP: Logged |

To the extent that your have silver that is sturdy enough for use, I would encourage you to go ahead and use it (except when any especially clumsy friends or family stop by for tea or dinner, or unthinking helpers who clear the table and put your beautiful sterling in the dishwasher). Most silver was made to be used and it makes your hobby all the more fun. You do not need to have matching sets of anything either - there is a fancy artistic style to make place settings with each utensil being of a different pattern, and you can get really creative by trying to make settings up with some kind of common theme among the different patterns. And then when your guests make comments on your silver it is a wonderful opening for you to tell them all about it and perhaps bewitch one or more of them into becoming interested in silver themselves. I like the way you think. Come to think of it, about 10 of my Demitasse spoons were admired when I use to feed my baby with them. I still show off my flatware chests, which has, in fact, gotten others interested. I still don't want to pull them out to use though, my friends aren't really the coffee and tea type if you know what I mean! IP: Logged |
