I have a coin silver medallion ladle marked J. Bowman. Does anyone have info on yrs. as a silversmith and region? I have been collecting antique sterling for 10 yrs. This is my first piece of coin silver and I am having trouble researching it. I like to know as much as I can about each piece that I have. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I found a few examples of his work on replacements.com. Other than that zilch.

Clear photos of the overall ladle and its details are as important as a clear photo of the marking. Without these any advice would have little confidence.

There is a watchmaker named John W Bowman who is listed in the 1850 census for Oxford, Pennsylvania. He was born in New York in about 1825. Google books has a snippet of information about him that says he died in February of 1860.

This doesn't really answer your question, but it could be one starting place for your research.

Maybe somebody will recognize the pattern of your ladle and be able to tell you something about it. To me with the distant shot of the whole ladle, it sort of looks like silverplate.

You are right about that Cheryl. I searched the name and thought I had been directed to this post which was my mistake. I have been going through all the "J" Bowman's in the 1850 census and had about one page of fifty names to look at before I would have gotten to Joseph again. My memory is just not there like I would wish it to be. So now there's at least two names to look at, and the gentleman on Arch Street may not be completely out to the picture. There is a John Bowman who was born in New York in about 1811 and who is listed in the 1870 Philadelphia census as a silverplate ware manufacturer.

Your photos were originally incorrectly added and Scott had to fix them. Also they had only been up for less than a day. Forum members do not typically monitor the forum on an hour by hour basis - many only stop by once a week or some even less frequently. Some come by several times a week, but patience is always needed. This is simply a forum where people who enjoy talking about silver gather to talk about silver. It is not just an instant identification service like some other forums. At this point, your posting and photos have been up for almost a whole day and you already have some very helpful responses. The most useful one seems to be the reference to the other thread where JBowman was discussed and WEV's thought there that JBowman was not a smith or manufacturer but rather was a retailer sounds to me as if it is the most likely case. As to whether it is a solid silver alloy or silverplate is unclear at this point. All of that aside, I think that it is a very nice looking ladle and should be a nice addition to your collection which I hope you enjoy using from time to time.
