I tried to post this in the SP section but did not have permission. I have a lot of Christofle SP. Does anybody know if they made an especially thick coat of silver? Or is any maker of SP known for an extra thick plate? Anyway, took some pieces to be tested and they tested positive for sterling then when reexamined it was concluded they were plated. I think they had the Christofle stamp--I'll look again if this topic is of any interest. IP: Logged |

Hi. Can you tell us a little about yourself and your interest in silver? IP: Logged |

Oh I've always been interested in art (fine or not) and in collectibles. My main thing is militaria if I must have one. But I inherited some silver items and am now learning about silver. Well, contemporary silver post, say, the 1500's. It's just a new area to me. :-) I hope that's okay. IP: Logged |

Oh pooh. I don't seem able to post anywhere but here. This is good to know in advance of putting in the work of uploading images to a host. The 'KGC' is easier to infiltrate. :-) Cheers! ------------------ IP: Logged |

Welcome to the forum. New members are initially limited to posting in the new members section. Clear photos with closeups of markings are a real must for any meaningful identification since there are so many different markings and many are very similiar. Also, photos enable everyone to appreciate and learn about member's silver and silverplated objects. Just follow the instructions in the yellow box above on how to post photos. Do you use your inherited Christofle every day or just on special occassions? Silve and silverplate is made to be used and it is so much nicer than plastic ware or even stainless steel. Christofle is as good as any of the many other reputable makers of silverplate in terms of the general quality of their silver electro plating. That said, even the heaviest plating is not very much actual silver and it can be measured in microns. A heavy plating might be something like 100 grams of silver is used to plate 24 spoons or forks which works out to about 4 grams of silver per utensil. "Testing" for silver by using things like acids is often a fairly useless thing to do unless you use some destructive techniques which would be a shame since you can tell what it is by the markings. The reason things like acid testing is unhelpful is that unless you dig down into the metal all you will be testing is what is on the surface. For silverplate, silver is what is on the surface unless it is very worn out and base metal is showing through. Here is a thread on Christofle for you to read through while you are providing some photos. IP: Logged |

Thank you, Kimo. I might add some thoughts to the Christofle thread. Off now to attempt my first pic under "Greek Priest." Cheers! ------------------ IP: Logged |
