Perhaps a silly question, I'm sure, but I was recently on a trip and had time to kill, so I wandered into a downtown area and hit some antique stores. I was poking around for some interesting silver (an addiction we share, as you all know!) and a fairly good sized platter caught my attention. It had the look of a Sheffield plate piece in terms of proportion, foliate scrollwork, and the manner in which the handles were attached to the body. Here is where it got interesting and confusing to me... Upon flipping the piece over, the only mark was a small applied button near one of the handles that said "Plated by Gorham Manufacturing Co" There was a number but I cannot remember what is was, a week later. I had always thought they imprinted their information (Company name, anchor, etc...) directly into their pieces, not applied a button stamped with their information, but what do I know. It got me to thinking so I flipped it over and did a "breath test" on the front center, and sure enough, there was an inlet silver cartouche in the tray. Even more odd... So... 1. Does saying they "plated" it imply they did not manufacture it? 2. Did clients send items to Gorham for replating services at some point in their history, even if it wasn't their own product? I am not knowledgeable about Gorham and tried using the search feature here to see if perhaps someone had spoken about it in the past, but no luck. IP: Logged |
