I am hoping that someone might know of the company Ormex? I have searched the web, but have found nothing. I have an interesting little perfume bottle (silver) in the shape of a shell with a mermaid in repousse on the front. It also has a conical shaped amethyst stone on the top.. marked Ormex.. I am thinking this might be a Mexican workshop, but haven't been able to find anything. Would appreciate hearing from someone if this rings a bell. Thanks IP: Logged |

This is a very late reply to this posting, but I just found a wonderful little perfume bottle made by Ormex and have done some research. The piece the poster spoke of is Mexican; I have not been able to pin down dates for Ormex, but a number of the perfume bottles I have seen have a Deco look to them, so would place it in the 20s-30s era. I am attaching a photo of my particular piece, which I think is quite fun.

“The Little Book of Mexican Silver Trade and Hallmarks” and other research seems to place this Mexican silver factory to the mid 20th century - likely producing between the 1940s and 1960s or perhaps even later. If you do a search on the web you will find a large number of small silver objects made by this company. Perfume bottles seems to be the most common but there are cigarette lighters, bracelets, etc. One feature that seem to be fairly common on many but not all of them are small inset conical or cabochon shaped stones. The perfume bottle that Doc has depicts an Aztec face design like you see on the old temples and stellae rather than art deco which is the sort of touristy designs that seem to be favored by this company. I think it is a lovely bottle. I can imagine someone collecting perfumes from this maker as there seem to be many different ones - each with a Mexican motif design.
