Arts and Crafts silver with a matrix turquoise and signed “Rice,” this pendant is certainly American. That’s about all we can discern though. Can anyone help us identify “Rice,” please? Thank you.

Oops. Ready, fire, aim. I should have done better research because I just found the best answer on this site here: Rice is Nice See below for a photo including the spring clasp, which brings up a comment. The spring ring was patented August 9, 1921 by H. Wachenheimer under patent 1,386,746. This piece certainly looks earlier (as does that shown in the link), but maybe not early enough. Obviously, the clasp could have been replaced. IP: Logged |

I've not heard of Rice, perhaps he or she was a small jeweler, hobbyist or student? The somewhat uneven making of this might support this thought, along with there being no easily found information in reference books. Just a guess though. The clasp could be a later addition to replace a broken one, or it could be contemporaneous with the making of this. I cannot be sure from an internet photo but from what I see the clasp seems to have a similar patina to the rest of it. It is so hard to date things by their design alone. Once a design like arts and crafts or deco or whatever is established it never entirely goes away. [This message has been edited by Kimo (edited 02-11-2012).] IP: Logged |

Bingo. I’m pretty certain I identified the correct “Rice” and it’s not any of those cited in Rice is Nice, where all of those that made jewelry worked in the ‘30’s and ‘40’s. This piece, as well as the one in the related link, was clearly made closer to the turn of the century. Clara Rice was studio artist from New York who exhibited there as well as in Chicago. Here’s a link for an exhibit she participated in at the Colony Club in New York City in 1912. She also exhibited in 1910 at the Ninth Annual Exhibition of the Chicago Art Institute, where she is listed as a “designer, maker, exhibitor” in their catalog. I found no evidence that Clara Rice worked for anyone or sold commercially. This also suggests the clasp was replaced, which I suppose was kind of obvious anyway. This was fun. IP: Logged |
