There have been several threads in the forums about various silver trophies over the years. For example, we had a thread about the engraver for the Stanley Cup which is passed from winner to winner. Not being a sports fan, I wonder what the general practice is for other such sports trophies. Does each year's winner keep their own trophy or do they have to pass it on to the next year's winner? Hello June! As best I know all of the trophies stay in the respective Halls of Fame of whatever sport. Replicas are given to whoever won. Not too sure about yachting etc. I know the players etc. of the Stanley cup each get to take it around for a day, but it is still the replica. Even the Masters golf green shirts are given back after one day. If I find out more info I'll let you know. Hope this answer helps. Some really formidable silver trophies have been made & designed! Go Devils! Jersey I was privileged to kiss the Stanley Cup, even though I knew it was a replica, I loved every minute of it. IP: Logged |

In Denmark we have various practice. Some are for the vinner to keep. Some are the so called "vandre pokal" can be translated as "walking cup" they belon to the winner for one year next year they are passed on to the new winner. These are given special regulations and when someone has won it a specified number of times it becomes his - permanent. I think that pracktis is normal also international. IP: Logged |

Thanks to you both for responding. The question came to me after seeing an interview with Novak Djokovic, the US, Australian and Wimbledon tennis champion. It showed him visiting with his childhood tennis coach who herself was a champion tennis player with a shelf full of trophies to prove it. Hello June, I am a huge baseball fan and I have recently noticed that this particular sport has increasingly gotten away from giving out silver trophies altogether. Not counting the World Series trophy, which is presented to the team's owner, the individual awards given to players are usually made of rival materials such as crystal. I know the Yankees had a trophy made and presented to Derek Jeter when he obtained his 3000th hit and it was done by Waterford. I am almost certain that the All-Star game MVP award is Waterford Crystal as well. I know the Home Run Derby champion is given a Waterford Crystal trophy. Several other sports are using Waterford crystal trophies as well. I know the Vince Lombardi trophy (NFL) is still Tiffany silver...but I believe the era of sterling silver trophies is steadily drawing to a close as the number of firms capable of crafting them has declined. I know this response doesn't exactly address your question, but it is a topic that's been on my mind lately and I wanted to throw my two cents out there. Hello again June. Just this morning I came across something I was totally unaware of regarding baseball trophies. The Louisville Slugger company issues a Silver Slugger award. It was instituted by the Hillerich & Bradsby bat company in the 1980's. It appears to be a regulation sized bat done in silverplate. Looks really cool! I am trying to find out who the maker is. The BCS trophy dropped recently and broke into a million pieces. Maybe they should go back to silver trophies. quote: IP: Logged |

Thank you for that, Scott. As a University of Alabama graduate, I feel a lot better now! About 10 years ago I lusted over a triple handled loving cup that was an employee award from either S.H. Kress or S.S. Kresge (I can't remember which and for what). It was engraved with multiple names and multiple years, so I guess the winner didn't get to keep it. It stayed in that shop for months. I wish I had come off my pocketbook. [This message has been edited by taloncrest (edited 04-17-2012).] IP: Logged |

Scott, thanks so much for the pointer to the Memorial Cup mishap. Hilarious (because reparable; the 'Bama incident is painful to think about). For non-hockey-fans, the Memorial Cup is the championship trophy for the playoffs among pro hockey's Junior leagues ((Western Hockey League, Ontario HL, and Quebec Major Junior HL). They're the first level of farm teams for the big-league National Hockey League. Here's a link to an earlier forum thread on the NHL's extensive silver trophy lineup: IP: Logged |

I was very pleased to see the Bryan brothers hoisting their Gentlemen's Silver Doubles Trophies at Wimbledon today along with all of the other winners. IP: Logged |

According to AHTW, a dutch soccer team were showing their silver dish, which they won after a year of movements over green grass, kicking a leather ball. The trophy was showed in Amsterdam on the roof of a riding bus. Short holding moment for the keeper, he forgot the traffic lights and the silver dish flied out of his hands. The dammage was even worse than a crystal price, we talk about silver!!!!! ;-) IP: Logged |
