My name is David and I just registered to participate in this fascinating forum. I wanted to take a few minutes to introduce myself to all of you and to let you know what my interests are and what I hope to get out of the SSF. I began collecting silver in earnest a little over two years ago after my wife and I got married. We had acquired as gifts some silver flatware and I was off! I now spend seemingly all of my free time either reading up on, or actively collecting, American silver. I am fascinated with the history of the American silver industry in general and so I do not restrict the boundaries of my collecting/research. I look forward to corresponding with all of you in the future. Thanks for taking the time to read my introduction! [This message has been edited by David C Walters (edited 06-25-2012).] IP: Logged |

Hello Everyone! Thank you all for the warm welcome and kind words. I am really looking forward to being an active participant in these forums. I can tell from some of the responses I've seen already that you have successfully assembled a fairly eclectic group of collectors. I am extremely impressed! IP: Logged |

Do you have a favorite object in your silver collection that you might like to post a photo of to start a discussion? We all love to see interesting silver things and talk about them. Let us know if we can help you through the process of posting photos. There are directions in the yellow box above, but sometimes people get stuck on a step or two. Kimo IP: Logged |

Hello Kimo, Oh do I have silver pieces that I'd love to post for discussion... I actually have one particular item that I'll be posting about at some point this weekend. I want to take my time with it and make it as thorough of a post as possible to ensure it promotes a lively discussion. I think I should be okay with posting photos - the Martins have done a very good job at providing instructions. IP: Logged |

Hose_dk: I know next to nothing about European silver (sometimes to my embarrassment) and I look forward to learning from you in the future. This ignorance caught up with me last week when my aunt purchased an English sterling pap boat and expected me (the family "silver expert") to have some idea of its provenance. I had to do some research on the fly to maintain my hard earned reputation! IP: Logged |

Hi David - nice introduction! I like to wander through old patents (as well as other places), and Nock is of interest since, in the mid '40s, my Mom initially chose his 1937 Rambler Rose (#D105,133) as her pattern, but ended up with a full service of his classic 1934 Candlelight (#D92,106) - used to find it rather boring, but age has given me more appreciation for the appeal of its simple sleek center ribbon over the intricate floral design. Another interesting Nock patent is the 1917 dripless tea/coffee strainer that he designed for Paye & Baker (#1,226,691); often misidentified as an infant or invalid feeder, it was produced in several forms, including a charming little bird, with the beak forming the spout. ~Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 04-24-2012).] IP: Logged |

Cheryl, Glad to hear that there's someone out there as interested in old patents as I am! I actually just picked up one of the Paye & Baker strainers that you mentioned precisely because I thought the patent was so interesting. Maybe someday down the road we'll have to start a few threads on nothing but fascinating patents (if it hasn't been done already). David IP: Logged |
