This little footed dish has an interesting scalloped edge, but I think its best feature is its little legs. They look to me like a double fleur de lis. How best could I display them? The dish is small, only 5.5" x 4.5" x 1 3/8"h. What do you think its intended use is? Butter? Bon bons? What could it be used for now? It's the size of a soap dish but that would make it very messy.

As far as I can tell from the hallmarks, it's Sheffield 1914, A784. What does that last part mean? It also looks like someone has scratched in tiny, tiny letters "vavx" or "vgvx" or "vjvx". What do you think that's about? It's not stamped in but scratched by someone with a tiny tool and a very steady hand.

Sorry about the bad phone pic quality.

The A784 is just the factory's part number. Dealers would order from factory catalogs and most factories assigned such letters/numbers to their products so dealers could order easily and accurately.

From your description of the markings it sounds like this is silver plate but a clear photo of the markings would be needed to be sure.

I would use it for something like bon-bons or after dinner mints.

To show off the feet when you are not using it I would put it on a shelf at eye level or a high shelf made of glass like many curio cabinets have.

Could you please try to take another photo of the marking on the bottom. I cannot see any details at all. Try using the macro setting on your camera - it normally has an icon of a little flower. This setting will let you get real close and in focus.

The hand scratched letters/markings have nothing to do with the dish. Sometimes owners mark things like this so they can identify their things in case of theft. Or sometimes stores put such markings on their stock for inventory control.
