I expect as everyone is busy with their holiday shopping and preparing for the holidays, that the posts over the next week+ may be few. It might be helpful if everyone shared suggestions for silver gift giving. I look at my old coin and silver plate flatware and then decide if the marks/patterns tell a good story. I think about the uninitiated to our passion/hobby who might find it interesting and then get hooked. IP: Logged |

I always look for spoons with the monograms of people I know. It's very strange how few of them there are! Maybe I just know people with weird initials. (Rob, if you're reading this, that nice Federal teaspoon with your initials is still waiting for you!) I also like to give a food gift with an appropriate serving piece. For example, a jar of nice jam with a pretty silver or silverplate preserve spoon, or some good cheese with a master butter knife. Sometimes I make some cinnamon sugar or ginger-spice sugar (stir some powdered cinnamon or powdered ginger and allspice, or whatever spices you prefer, into a cup of sugar--be sure to use plenty of spice) and put it in a nice old covered china sugar bowl. I tie a pretty silver (or silverplate) sugar spoon to the handle with a ribbon. I also like to include a square of silver-polishing cloth so the person receiving the gift can keep it looking nice if they don't use it and wash it every week. Many Christmases ago, my Mom gave her sisters antique teaspoons engraved with their initials, along with ornate china cups & saucers and a selection of fancy teas...when my Aunt Kathryn passed away a few years later, Mom asked my cousin for the spoon, a sweet remembrance to join the orphan spoons in the spooner on her counter. I did the same for a friend one year, using a pretty mug and home-made cocoa mix. Have also, for many different occasions, made little floral arrangements in the ubiquitous mid 20th century silver (or silver-mounted glass) cigarette urns - most that receive them are surprised at their original purpose. ~Cheryl IP: Logged |

And are you saying I have weird initials?? Seriously I love doing the same and not only with the engraved initials but with makers marks. It is more common for me to see a makers name that matches a cousin, sibling (Butler - Hudson,NY) or friend. I happened to find a maker that matched the last name of a museum curator friend and was very pleasantly surprised by his thank you saying he was thrilled and that the man was a direct relative and he had no work by him. Rob, I love that story about the curator's ancestor! In fact, I did find a teaspoon with a friend's first initial and last name!! She was excited to get it. I don't think she's related to the silversmith, but who knows? That spoon asked me to tell you that it longs to go live to you. It does not feel at home with me AT ALL. IP: Logged |

That means the city mice have to come visit the country mice and then one gets a spoon and the other gets a very gaudy plastic hair comb that was found at the country flea market! IP: Logged |
