A new member silverforger sent the following email. silverforger is a working silversmith. What do members think? Is the SSF a good place for a working Silversmith to participate? I think both the non-smith and smith sharing is a good thing. quote: IP: Logged |

From one of the working smiths here to Silverforger, greetings and welcome! This forum is a great resource if you have a love of the history/mysteries of silver. It is not where I go for interaction with other smiths on technical questions. I would recommend spending time in the archives on subjects your interested in or would like to know more. Be patient with the ways of the forum and I am sure you will grow to like it. I look forward to hearing from you and do feel free to post any questions. IP: Logged |

Welcome. To help you get familiarized with the forum organization, scroll down the list of forums until you come to the 20th / 21st Century Silversmiths Forum, which should be of primary interest to you. Click on the title and then you can browse through the contents to see what kind of discussions are included. You can use the search function (link on the upper right of the page) to get to older posts than are presently displayed. Good luck and enjoy! IP: Logged |

There are both silversmiths and non-silversmiths here and everyone seems to appreciate the chance to interact with the other 'side' and learn from each other. I hope you do decide to participate. Kimo IP: Logged |

I think this is an ideal place to learn and would highly recommend those interested in silversmithing history and you place in it. Fred IP: Logged |

To Silverforger I would suggest that this site would be very impoverished if not for the contributions of collectors and enthusiasts. But, perhaps a section where silversmiths might bat things around with each other and discuss techniques would be useful and, perhaps, interesting to those who are not silversmiths. middletom IP: Logged |

Middletom, You, and any interested other smiths, may use a Silver Caucus Room to Pilot the idea of a Silversmith to Silversmiths Forum. Then if it has enough participation/discussion it can broken out and expanded into an official Silversmith to Silversmiths Forum. What I am thinking, whether it is a Silver Caucus Room or Silversmith to Silversmiths Forum, is that posters (silversmiths) would need special permission but anyone could read the posts. Or do you think it needs to be completely private? If you and the other silversmith members want to give it a go please let me know. IP: Logged |

Gosh, where would we be without working silversmiths to answer technical questions!? IP: Logged |

Personally, I hope the silversmiths will allow us mere silveradmirers to eavesdrop on their technical conversations, which are sure to be interesting. IP: Logged |

Scott, I've been out of touch a while. It is good of you to offer the use of the forum for slversmith discussions.I would be very interested in contributing but I don't know just how to start such a discussion. I could ask,"How much does you hammer weigh?" but that wouldn't generate much interest. I'll give some more thought and, perhaps, someone else in the mean time can get it started. I could start in on Agleopar about hot and cold forging, but we've sort of done that to death. middletom IP: Logged |
