Hello,

I inherited some old family silver flatware a couple years ago, including some (appraised) coin silver, sterling silver, and marked plate silver. I finally got around to cleaning some of the pieces recently.

One of the serving spoons does not have any indication of material (as is true of some of my coin silver), but it does have two marks: "V&Co." and "A. Dubois & Co. S.F.Cal."

I saw a discussion of old San Francisco silver flatware on these forums (Collecting San Francisco Silver) and thought someone might have information on this spoon: Who made it and what is it likely to be made of (coin/plate/sterling)?

My best guess is that "A.Dubois" is the retailer of a "William K Vanderslice" spoon. In that case, I would think the spoon is likely coin silver or sterling.

Edit:

A search suggests "A Dubois" might have been a San Francisco jeweler: (page 162)

A search on "Vanderslice silver patterns" determined the pattern: "Waterlilly"

Does knowing this help determine whether this is plate, coin or sterling?

Two threads you should look at are the ”Olive pattern” and the ”The Original Olive Pattern” in this Forum.

All of the variants of the Olive pattern must have been to be popular during their time period as it is one pattern that today is fairly easy to find.

The first thread above identifies your pattern as Vanderslice’s water lily pattern. Do a search with this Forum’s search engine for more threads about the Olive pattern.
