Hello all, I am trying to gauge potential interest that silver collectors or anyone interested in silver might have in the establishment of a digital silver reference library. My employer has an extensive collection of books (some dating back to the mid-1700s), trade/exhibition catalogues, and other material related to silver. The collection features works by notable writers such as E. A. Jones, John Culme, Arthur Grimwade, and many more. Many items are limited editions or extremely rare/unique publications. At present the collection includes some 1500-2000 titles, with the possibility of other reference collections being acquired. It is our hope to scan these materials into an online digital library and charge a small subscription fee to access the library or fee for each download. Is this something that you would be interested in seeing happen? Any suggestions? IP: Logged |

Hallo silverlibrarian, I make a referencebook of old silver from Germany before 1888. I am more interested on citizen-books or old german address books or Church records. IP: Logged |

So your interest in a library comprised solely of books related to silver would be fairly limited then? We do have many German titles in the collection (and many more works on European silver): Das Ornamentwerk des Daniel Marot I don't know if any of these would be of interest to you? I'm sorry that we don't offer anything in the way of church records, addresses, etc. IP: Logged |

Welcome to the Silver Salon Forums.
Yes, but ... I don't have the time right now to craft a full response. At this moment in time the continuum of collecting and researching silver finds the tides receding. Much of the best scholarship in silver is done by a diminishing few. Many of these scholars can ill afford the lofty internet prices so there is a lot of sideline scholarship happening. A digital library of obscure and hard to find silver references would be a boon to silver scholars everywhere but it would have to be an altruistic project. Over the decades we haven't figured out how to cover our Silver Salon expenses and I am guessing a digital Silver library would require a major benefactor. Even with a nominal access fee I am sure the out of pocket will never be covered. BTAIM, I am hopeful that other members will have some good suggestions and more positive comments. IP: Logged |

Hi Scott, yeah right - you can earn money so hardly. It takes a lot of fanaticism, love of silver and Altroismus to to take on such a task. I myself am doing my project because nobody else does, but it is necessary, as every year tons of old silver lost forever and I try as much as possible to document it and to save a bit here and there. about the silverlibrarian I am interested on this books, but I think, there are I think it would be because of copyright problems. Thank you both for the input. Yes, funding will be difficult to come by and there are copyright issues to consider before we can proceed. Hopefully some insitutions with an interest in this subject area such as museums may be able to provide some form of support, or research partnerships with various universities may be possible. But I think you are correct to say that this would have to be a largely altruistic venture. IP: Logged |

silverlibrarian: Perhaps it is not necessary to scan all the books themselves. After all, there are some of the works already scanned in the net, while nevertheless are excerpts from the Scheffler books that make up almost half of the plants. The books by Hintze, you can download it and the Rosenberg also. There are also some attempts of online reference works, such as silver tin. Provide such a link collection would be a start, but it will probably pay no money. Man needs to just know that the interest is very low. So I suspect that it is only about 1000-5000 people in Germany who are interested in this subject. [This message has been edited by silberpunze (edited 01-18-2014).] IP: Logged |

quote: I would be shocked if there were a tenth of that here (US) with any interest. My little project gets a fair amount of traffic and I am willing to bet that less than 5% are not there for the pure genealogy or making sales on ebay or whatever other sale venue they use. If I charged admission for what I have gathered, I'd have few visitor at all. If not free, it is a fool's errand, I am afraid. [This message has been edited by wev (edited 01-18-2014).] IP: Logged |

It should also be noted that real research viable transcriptions are not cheap -- 127 page book scanned and OCD'd with proof, correction, and web ready in a searchable format: 32 hours at $125 per -- how many books did you have? IP: Logged |

Duly noted... we have at least 1500 books, possibly more. We may be partnering with a local university to take care of the scanning requirements, or possibly using an outside vendor, but there are cheaper options available. I know of at least three reputable companies that will scan a book with OCR to deliver a 300-600 dpi searchable PDF file for approx. $3/book + $0.10 per page. Still, it would not be cheap. I am always looking for online resources. Can anyone recommend a good book that would include comments on Hieronymous Mittnacht, from Augsberg, 18th century. I have been looking, but not finding. Even the write ups from the good auction houses do not have much info and they seem to recycle the same sentences over and over. It will be in German no doubt, since there is not anything I have found in English IP: Logged |

Actually, I have another question about German silver. Has there been any work done on the silver boxes that housed some of the earlier Griesbaum bird boxes? Now I do not have access to German reference books, however at least in English there is not any information at all. IP: Logged |
