I love old 'everything'. I love the use of silver when serving food. Recently, I purchased a silver pie as well as cake servers for my daughter. It seems I am constantly traveling with my own silver for my family to use on holidays. I also recently purchased what I learned was a JIFFY CRUMBER # 2779. It may have been made C 1920. It has a hollow handle which can be opened at the end.; however, it looks as though the end by the scoop where the crumbs should be stored is sealed. Why? I don't know. Does anyone know the manufacturer, or have any history on this piece? Thanks, M

The hollow handle may be a storage place for the swept up crumbs until the waiter gets to somewhere that they can dispose of the crumbs. That is just a guess on my part. It is nice to have the name on the piece to identify what its use is. I don't know who the manufacturer was, but they were an inventive company. It may have originally come with a brush. I have seen many crumbers made from coin silver and many of them today are sold as food servers as not many have a need for a crumber. IP: Logged |

It's a Weidlich Bros. item, for some reason, you've cropped off their mark to the left of 'Jiffy Crumber'. A blurb in the 1926 Jeweler's Circular notes it as available in both silver and silverplate, but I've never seen one in sterling: 'Weidlich Bros. Mfg. Co. of Bridgeport, Conn. showed a large and fine line of their products both in sterling and plated ware, ... A piece that interested the women was the Jiffy Crumber, both in solid silver and plated, in which the crumbs are carried into the hollow handle, thus avoiding the "mess" that housewives abhor.' The 1926 patent:

I am so happy to learn more regarding the CRUMBER #2779 that I recently purchased. It was really wonderful to know someone took interest, and helped me identify this lovely piece. Thanks, Michele IP: Logged |
