My name is Matt and I'm from Australia, I just bought some items that have 925 on the bottom and I need a second opinion because they have a yellow tinge to them that I have not seen before with sterling. Some areas underneath the goblets are a white metal and the inside of the teapot/hot water jug are also. See pics for item, cleaned they look a little less gold colored.

Welcome to the Forum and congratulations on posting a nice picture of your finds. I am just guessing, but could the yellow tinge be the remains of a gold wash? Maybe through the years someone has polished most of it off. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 05-07-2014).] IP: Logged |

Another possibility is that someone lacquered the pieces to stop them from tarnishing, and the lacquer yellowed. Try cleaning a small area with a soft rag or cotton ball dipped in nail-polish remover and see if the yellow comes off. IP: Logged |

Ok, good suggestions, just gave a patch of on of the bases a thorough wash with acetone and cotton but no joy there, no change in the metal's appearance and no discoloration of the cotton. I don't think it is gilding because it is very even. I'll be getting it tested by a jeweler tomorrow so we'll see then. Thanks ahwt and Polly, I'll post the results when I get em. IP: Logged |

Ok, not silver, went to a jeweler who buffed a portion of it but the gold color did not come off, so he reckons it is not silver gilt, however 5 shop assistants in different jewelers shops took the 925 at face value and told me that it was gold plated silver even cash converters (Australian Pawn Shop chain)said it was silver. Nobody did an acid test but I think the jeweler was right. Should I sell them or keep it as a reminder to ask more questions and not trust 925 stamps? IP: Logged |

Be interested to read if you got any further with that. The goblets in particular look very like plated brass goblets I've seen, often in plush lined boxes, and from India. IP: Logged |
