Hi Tom and welcome to the silver forum. As you say, some nice clear photos with close ups of the markings and photos of the overall objects really are essential. Teenagers are great resources for helping our with computer stuff, but we have laid out some step by step directions if you go to the yellow box above and click on the link on how to post photos. It is not hard if you take each step one at a time. If you get stuck just let us know what you are doing and where you are stuck and we will help you - we are almost as good as teenagers. In the meantime, could you please take a look at the other part of the yellow box where it asks new members to please introduce themselves a bit. Are you a collector or dealer or both? What areas of silver are of the most interest to you? What kind of collections do you have? Are you posting to find more information to help in selling your objects or are you just interested in learning more about silver? Best regards, IP: Logged |

Thanks, Tom. That is a good start. Would you also be able to post a nice clear closeup photo of the marking on the silverware itself? It should be on the back side of the handles. Hi Tom. I am a bit confused by your post "User ID & password works." I was asking you to please introduce yourself just a bit per the rules of the forum, and to add a clear close up photo of the markings on the back of the handles. I assume it is all the same marking on every utensil so just one will do. Also, is there a reason why you believe that these are coin silver? The reason I ask is they are German and Germany did not use coin silver. Coin silver is just a common name for indefinite purity American silver in the 1800s mostly before the Sterling standard but also somewhat afterwards. The nickname coin silver came from the problem that there was not enough silver bullion available in the US before the big discoveries of silver deposits in the west and so silver makers commonly used anything made of silver that was available such as melting down silver coins of various purities from various other countries, old broken silverware, out of fashion silverware, or anything else. When melted together the purity tended to be anywhere between 85 percent and the low 90 percents range. Later coin silver, including coin silver made in the 20th century was manufactured as 90 percent purity and was used to save a bit of money from Sterling which is 92.5 percent, or to make the silver look like an older style for marketing purposes.
