Hi all, I am new! I inherited my grandmothers largely Victorian/Edwardian dining room collection and I love it and have been adding to it. I am not a dealer of any sort, just a collector! I love old silver pieces & enjoy actually using them. I just bought a side handle chocolate/coffee pot [at auction] and it is marked "Charles Casper 042 silver soldered" with a logo of a C in a star. I am aware he founded Meriden (and the seller listed it as Meriden in fact), but have been unable to find much about pieces marked with his name alone. I assume it would predate the Meriden Co? I paid less than $xx so was not expecting much and honestly I bought it to use more than as a collectible, but to my surprise it was a very nice quality piece in good shape. Does anyone know anything about Casper's silver marked with his own name only? Thanks, IP: Logged |

Hi Heartwings. Welcome to the forum and many thanks for introducing yourself. Photos are a really important part of posting questions - clear, well focussed and well lit photos of both of the overall object and closeups of any markings. There are instructions for how to post photos in your posting in the yellow box above. Please give it a try. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the photos. Good job of showing the overall pot and the marking and keeping them small enough to meet the size requirements of the forum. One suggestion for your next time posting photos would be to use your macro setting on your camera for the closeups of the markings. The macro setting which has an icon that looks like a small flower will let you get really sharp images from those closeups. I am not an expert in Charles Casper so hopefully someone here is and can tell you more about him. What I can tell you is this is silver plated and was likely used in a hotel or restaurant. The term "silver soldered" refers to the alloy of metal used to solder the pieces of metal at the joints. This alloy is stronger than most other alloys and so was typically used on hollowware that was expected to go through heavy and extended use such as in a hotel or restaurant rather than a home. Often the really big name hotels, restaurants, ships, railroads, etc. went to the extra expense of having their "hotelware" monogramed or engraved with their logo or crest which makes those pieces extra interesting. Does yours have any such marking or is it plain? IP: Logged |

Charles Casper started the Meriden Silver Plate Company in 1869. I suppose this could be from one of the companies before for example:

Right now, I don't have the time to do addition research. But often one thing leads to another thing... This is the last thing I found that might lead to relevant info on Casper. In the least, it is interesting about Parker.

Thanks so much, I had never seen that clipping, very interesting! I had seen that other post, I found it when researching Casper & that's how I discovered this forum. I did use the macro setting when I took the photo of the logo, I just don't have a very fancy camera and that's the best it does. I was aware silver soldered is often heavy plate "hotel silver" and I suspect that is how it survived so well as, other than a little ding, it's in great shape and does not show it's age. I guess it could also be the piece simply did not get much use as the finish on the wooden handle is not very worn. It has K-C (K dash C) on the front in fancy script, which I suppose could be a hotel or restaurant? The person I bought it from was in Canton, Ohio (which is near Cleveland) so maybe one of those is the C? Wouldn't it be wonderful if these pieces could talk and tell us about their lives?
