My wife and I collect mid-nineteenth century coin silver holloware, but today, have purchased a couple of pieces of flatware in the William K. Vanderbilt pattern by Tiffany. I am wanting to find out more history about this pattern than I can find through [online searching]. I would like to know if anyone could tell me things like:
I would appreciate any info/history you can provide. Many thanks. IP: Logged |

Wm Hood's book, Tiffany Silver Flatware has a 3 page section on this service with pictures and a sampling of some of the pieces made. Most of the information provided deals with the design. He states in the text, "There are no data on the original size and composition of this service. We have secondhand information that the service is largely intact, still in the possession Of Vanderbilt family heirs". IP: Logged |

I understand that Tiffany made 10 different special order patterns for various wealthy families. I have read that the pattern they made for John MacKay was produced using a half of a ton of silver that was sent to Tiffany by MacKay for this service. That would be a very large amount of flatware. My guess is that the Vnaderbilt pattern would likely have been of a size on that order of magnitude. IP: Logged |

Carpenter's book on Tiffany flatware mentions that Tiffany charged Mr. Vanderbilt $10,000 up front in 1884 just to produce the dies for his service before before they would start production. That would be approximately $240,000 today. The Mackay service mentioned in an earlier post was for 24 persons and consisted of 1,250 pieces of which 918 were flatware related. It took 200 men two years to complete (ref. Hood). IP: Logged |
