Reference book question- I recently became interested in and began collecting American figural and aesthetic style spoons made in the last half of the 19th century. I do have a flatware book by Noel Turner, but can find no mention as to patterns such as Gorham's Egyptian pharaoh, isis, morning glory or polar bear patterns. Other makers such as George Sharp and John Wendt also produced exceptional figural patterns. Any advice as to good reference materials covering these pattern types would be greatly appreciated. BTW- Silver Magazine has been very helpful Thanks in advance!!! IP: Logged |

That's great! Goodness, my copy was just under $20 delivered and I was incredibly happy! This is a good time to pick up silver books, they all seem to be reasonably priced. Let us know what you think. It's a terrific reference. You might also seek "Gorham Silver" by Charles Carpenter. That's another must have. IP: Logged |

I do have Carpenter's book in my "library." Agreed, a good recommendation. IP: Logged |

A library project was conducted some time ago and also the Forum has a Library listings section that is very helpful. These posts may be helpful to you. The decline in prices was predicted several years ago by a book dealer friend who noticed that calls for silver books were on the decline. He has always been able to predict what the next hot topic is in collecting by what reference books customers are looking for. IP: Logged |

Well, the "Silver in America" book arrived a couple of days ago. So far an outstanding read. Thanks for the advice. ahwt- to quote: "The decline in prices was been able to predict what the next hot topic is in collecting by what reference books customers are looking for." A very interesting observation that appears to have validity. Parallels many conversations that I have had with dealers regarding younger generations and their disinterest in collecting antiques. I remember when Turner's flatware book always sold for north of $100. It is a good pattern ID reference but as I recall doesn't delve too much into figural and non-line patterns. Wm Hood's book on Tiffany flatware is handsomely illustrated with many beautiful and rare pieces, including some non-Tiffany pieces that may pique your interest. I would suggest looking into back issues of Silver Magazine and some issues of Magazine Antiques. In the past both have featured fine articles about niche flatware categories including Aesthetic Movt and figural stuff. IP: Logged |

Thanks for the reply and yes, I have acquired many back issues of Silver Magazine. I continually rotate through my stack of back issues especially after acquiring a new addition to my collection. Still amazes me as to what I pick up on the second or third time trough these back issues...call it learning through repetition. Will pay attention to the other references mentioned. Thanks to all and polish on!! IP: Logged |
