J dot H inside of a indented square or four leaf clover, for got to mention, it is on a Cann 1st or 2nd quarter 18th century, thought it might be Hurd but looks more like John S Hutton NY 1720 from Ensko page 295... am not familiar with him... any ideas [This message has been edited by Smaug (edited 06-16-2016).] IP: Logged |

Hi Kimo, I posted in the new because I couldn't get into the other areas, for some reason using my previous logon, I have been working with this site for a very long time.. search smaug or t-man-nc, but for the sake of info... I am a retired executive after 49 years in the IT industry, have been collecting old coin silver for the past 35 years, my interest is in early American silversmith. why I am post is I am in the process of acquiring a piece from the mid 1700's and wanted some background on the smith, John S. Hutton. I saw that WEV did not have a mark for this smith in his site, and as I am nearly blind, I am having the wife take pics and send them... PS I get my grandson to read a lot of the material to me, so I may not get everything entirely correct, but I do love the silver and admire those who can may so many beautiful things. Thanks, IP: Logged |

Hi Smaug. I deeply apologize for not recognizing you. I just saw the post being displayed as being a new member's first posting. Do you have a closeup photo of the marking? best regards, IP: Logged |

Nice to see you back, Smaug. Look at John Strangeways Hutton. He used at least two more marks than I show. IP: Logged |

Sent along to me
The mark (which is actually J.H) does resemble the Ensko drawing, but I have never seen it on an actual piece. IP: Logged |
