I'm new to this forum. My name is Doug, and I live in New York City. I've been entranced by the rich lustre of silver objects since I was a kid visiting my grandparents' home. I have recently started cleaning my silver items with more natural (electrochemical) solutions instead of the scary toxic commercial cleaners. I like the fact that collecting sterling silver objects means I'm collecting something which has intrinsic value as well as functional and aesthetic values. I am looking for a database available to the public which contains approximate measurements, including weights, of as many manufacturers' hollowware as I can find so I can research the types of pieces I'd be interested in. I prefer pieces that are more stout so that they will more easily resist denting. Can anyone point me to a resource? [This message has been edited by Hi Ho Silver (edited 07-19-2016).] IP: Logged |

Hello HiHo. I am not sure I have heard of such a data base as you are talking about. Over the centuries there have been so many silver smiths and silver manufacturing companies all making so many things of silver that I am not sure such a list would be realistic to produce. And it would be even more difficult when looking at hand-made silver since there would be variations from piece to piece by the same smith. Welcome to the forums Doug. What electrochemical silver cleaner are you using? Not sure I've heard that particular term before. To your database question, Kimo is right on target. There are way too many variations to catalog. If you are buying strictly online, you need to pay attention to the weights and dimensions given since you can't actually touch and see the pieces.
