Thank you, June. I notice that the butler neglected to use her yardstick, so the forks don't line up with the bottoms of the knives. Bad butler! IP: Logged |

Polly great setting. I think I would forgive the butler as the fanned napkins are great. How did you do that? We went out to dinner on Thanksgiving as we went to the flea market in Nashville. We did bring out a few birds. IP: Logged |

I love your turkeys! And your clock and paisley and everything else in the photo. The napkins are a cheap linen/cotton blend from that Swedish box store. I fold them in zigzags horizontally until I get a long, thin rectangle, which I then fold in half, making a V shape. I tuck the bottom of the V into a napkin ring. Because the napkin material is coarse enough to be stiff and there's enough linen in it that it holds folds easily, it holds the zigzags but springs out into a fan shape. If your napkins are softer, you could probably get a similar effect by starching and ironing them. You can adjust the diameter of the fan by moving the napkin ring up or down; I like the way it fills the plate. I can imagine someone more energetic than me making them into turkey tails and attaching paper turkey bodies to the napkin rings. IP: Logged |

Also, the resolution of the photos isn't good enough to see this, but I was proud of my place cards. The names are printed on slips of folded paper, like ordinary place cards, but instead of just putting them on the table, I stuck them in the tines of cocktail forks and set them in the water glasses. Like this:
(I used three patterns of c. 1880s Whiting cocktail forks, two different twist patterns and the modern-looking pattern shown here.) IP: Logged |
