[26-2624] Hello - New to the site. Enjoy collecting old stuff and metal detecting. I came across a box at an auction that had over 100 spoons. Most of them were silver plate and some sterling. The spoon in question is very crude and flimsy. I did the magnet test and now waiting on my silver solution test to arrive. There are no marks to indicate that is silver but then again, it looks like it was made with some crude methods. The real glimmer of hope with this is that there are some markings and initials on the handle. I'm hoping that someone may have an idea of region and or maker / date. It measures 5" and weighs 7.7g.

Welcome to the forum! No need to test it. It's coin silver. Probably made 1790-1810. It's not in the best condition, but a nice find none the less. IP: Logged |

Hi. Could you please introduce yourself just a bit more per the friendly request in the guidelines on becoming a member here? In the mean time, I urge that you send that silver testing solution back to whomever you purchased it from as it will be relatively useless at best and damaging at worst. It will not tell you whether the metal is silver or not - it will only tell you whether the surface of the metal is silver. In other words it will give you the same result for pure silver and for silver plate. The only way for it to tell you for use what the metal actually is all the way through is to cut down into the metal to get to the metal in the middle and test that with your solution. However doing that will seriously damage your object. There are other better ways that are not destructive to test for silver if that is important to you. IP: Logged |

This person posted back in January. The post popped up now because Scott fixed the images. I don't think the OP is still watching. In case anyone else is curious, it looks like c. 1790s coin silver to me. IP: Logged |

I emailed them...lets see.... I'm betting the spoon came from person/family of means because the engraver had some skill. IP: Logged |

I figure someone will take exception to my engraving comment.... Early spoons are often seen with "prik" and/or "scratch" engraving. Seen less these days because if the engraving isn't pretty then old coin spoons tend to go to melt. I went looking & found these which aren't "prik" or "scratch" but are representative of period engraving I typically think of.
I think the engraver on Zorlac's spoon did a better and more interesting job. IP: Logged |
