I am a new member who has gotten some silver items from my mother and my grandmother. A few of the things I have not been able to identify as thoroughly as I would like, so I am hoping to get some help here. The first item I wanted to ask about is what I believe to be grape shears. I can not quite figure out the marks, and I have looked and looked to try to identify from the pattern and been unsuccessful. Would appreciate help if anyone recognizes. I know the mark photo is not great. I will work on it more tomorrow if needed.

Hi Sue. It was unclear from your posting as to whether you are researching to sell these or are simply wanting to know more about your nice things that you inherited? The way to edit a post is to look at the top of a posting that you made and you will see three little icons. The icon in the middle of those looks like a sheet of paper with a pencil across it. If you click on that you will be able to edit that particular posting. I do not recognize the markings on this which leads me to thinking that they are not silver but rather silver plated. That makes additional sense since silver is not an especially hard or durable metal and so it would not be a good choice for a working tool like this. For example, on sterling silver flatware, the blades of the knives are typically made of stainless steel since silver blades would wear out quickly. As for the pattern, I do not recognize it fro the somewhat unclear photo, but in many cases such items were not part of a silver service with a named pattern. Such objects were often sold individually and as such the makers used more generic or individualistic designs. Perhaps someone here might recognize the design and the markings and can add to my initial thoughts. IP: Logged |

Your shears are very attractive and bear a resemblance to the King's or Queen's pattern. I think these patterns have been popular since before 1800 and have been discussed many times in this forum. See English Kings and Queens pattern for one example. Grape scissors or shears have also been discussed and one having looped ends like yours is discussed in for Table Setting for Drinks Party. You can do some more searching on this forum for other posts that should be of interest to you. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 02-08-2017).] IP: Logged |
