Unfortunately there are no published references for modern British sponsors' marks so you will probably not get an answer here. Your best hope of identifying SF is by contacting the Birmingham Assay Office directly. There is a 'contact' link on their web page: https://theassayoffice.co.uk/ IP: Logged |

Is there a known reason why the use of a date mark is now voluntary? IP: Logged |

The reason for the date letter being voluntary is a 1998 amendment to the 1973 Hallmarking Act which brought in a number of new regulations with the intention of bringing the UK hallmarking system into line with those in Europe. The main changes were: - Standards to be expressed as parts per thousand on all metals, e.g. sterling silver to be marked 925, etc - Date letters are optional - Pictorial fineness standard marks (lion passant for silver, crown for gold, orb for platinum) are also now optional - Separate marks for imports abolished - New standards established for all metals IP: Logged |
