Does anybody know anything about these marks? I have a set of coffee urn, tea and coffee pot, sugar and cream with these marks. I have done research and looked at hundreds of pictures. The funny thing is, the design of these pieces look ALMOST identical to Sheridan items. Could my pieces be a replica or copycat? I have included a Sheridan piece on the white background.

Welcome to the Silver Salon Forums.

Thanks for correcting and adding more images. Good photos.

I'm a little busy... perhaps someone else will look into this?

Can anybody tell me about this mark? I have included a Sheridan Coffee Urn (background white) and my coffee urn. They are almost exactly the same with a few minor ornate details. I'm new to silver history, but is there such a thing as a copycat or a replica of silver plate items? It's been said that the initial marks May indicate a high end department store marking. Any info would be greatly appreciated. ty

I don't recall Sheridan ever using a lion rampant like that, or those letters. I assume the second two letters are SP and stand for silver plate since these are silver plate and not silver. Many firms made this kind of hollowware in similar designs. They were all going for the same market and Victorian style design was what they all were doing so you will see a fair amount of similarity among many makers. I am not sure I would agree with the letters being an indicator of a "high end" department store. All kinds of stores including department stores of all levels and jewelry stores of all levels were buying wholesale lots from makers who were manufacturing a great deal of this kind of ware and many of these stores from high end to low end were ordering these wares without makers markings so they could apply their own, or were having the factories apply the store's markings directly.

When you clean these up please do so very gently and with a good quality paste polish and a very well washed and softened 100 percent cotton cloth. Do not use dip polish or do not use any kind of abrasive cleaner or non-cotton cloth as they will remove some of the silver plate and by now the plate has likely become a bit thin with many decades of polishing. I do hope that you will use them for your family and when guests come over.
