Silver teapot appearing to be from the 1800's purchased in Great Britain. The "crown" looks different from other crowns representing Sheffield that I have seen and unsure if the animal hallmark actually represents a lion. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Apologies for not posting more info on myself. I have collected silver items over the years for personal use and enjoyment, I like researching the history of items that I have and two have puzzled me--this teapot that was purchased in Great Britain and a silver tea set which I placed in a separate post. I just found this forum and am hoping someone more knowledgeable might be able to help me with these pieces. Thank you so much! IP: Logged |

I do not recognize the markings, though they are not British silver hallmarks. I do not recall seeing any Sheffield silver plate markings like these. The animal appears to be a dog rather than a lion to my eye. The second mark appears to be a harp on its side. I checked my references to Hanau silver pseudo-hallmarks and I do not see them there - they often used fanciful markings meant to look like they were some kind of British hallmarks to improve their sales. Unlike silver where the markings are pretty well documented, there is not a great deal of information on silver plate hallmarks since there were so many makers and since collectors many consumers have historically tended to go for silver objects. Hopefully someone will be recognize these marks and let you know for sure what they are. IP: Logged |
