There is a new legit technology that is fundamentally a good & interesting concept. Unfortunately the bad guys have noticed and have corrupted the "good legit tech". As such most Virus/Malware/Privacy protection software blocks the "new legit tech". In time, I expect the proper safeguards will be incorporated into the "new legit tech". When the protections are incorporated and the Virus/Malware/Privacy protection software can tell the difference, then this might be something we could consider at the SSF. Fundamentally most users don't use all the computing power they have available for use. Users can "rent out" their spare computing power; much like renting out spare space in your garage. If the "good legit tech" was implemented at the SSF, users could contribute their spare computing power to the SFF. And the SSF gets paid for doing background processing. The "good legit tech" lets the user install a browser application such that when they have their browser open on the SSF then their spare computing power is used by SSF in the background. This way the SSF makes operating money without a cash contribution. Today, I think there are too many problems with the "good legit tech" but I can envision a day when the problems are resolved. If this was a way to transparently and without privacy/tracking issues help the SSF get a revenue stream would you participate? IP: Logged |

I think I would want to know what my computing power was being used for. IP: Logged |

Until they fix some of the problems with the "new tech", I can't say for sure. Any industry that processes lots of data is a candidate for off loading some of their computing. As an example, NASA does this. NASA has trillions of star images that need to be searched with fancy algorithms looking for Exoplanets. NASA's super computers can't do it all in a timely manner (it going to take decades) so they off load some of the processing. IP: Logged |

I would be happy for my computer to work for NASA, but not (for example) for it to mine bitcoins. IP: Logged |

Like Polly if the user is known and suitable I would not object. My computer is getting a little slow and when I get a new one is it possible just to leave the old hooked up to the internet for use? IP: Logged |

Scott, if you had vetted the end user I'd be perfectly happy with that arrangement. The only problem is that I can not remember the last time I used my computer! It's iPhones and pads all the way down now.... [This message has been edited by agleopar (edited 02-19-2018).] IP: Logged |

The "good legit tech" will use a phone (which is a computer with a browser). IP: Logged |
