Ciao All ! My name is Waldemar, living in Italy (Genoa). I am a private collector of antique silver. Have posted a photo (please properly post photos) and would like to ask you if you know the initials with crown engraved on these tongs. Grazie, Waldemarr IP: Logged |

Ciao, Waldemarr, e benvenuto. Do you have any special areas of collecting interests in antique silver? Perhaps of particular countries or periods of time or special types of object? The initial on your tongs appears to be the letter F. The crown above it does not have an arc above it that would signify it being that of a monarch so it is likely something like a Duke or an Earl or similar rank of nobility. Different countries are slightly different. There are a great many possibilities as to who the F might be and I am not sure it would be possible to be specific as to which one. Dear Kimo, thank you so much for your answer. I tried to figure out which "F" noble Brittish family it could be, but seems rather difficult. I am in to mainly British 18th century silverware. Ciao, Waldemar IP: Logged |

I do not recognize this particular design of a crown as it is not specifically anything in British or French or German or any other continental heraldry that I have been able to find. It is even possible that it is not a specific reference to a particular rank of nobility but rather just something generic. And it is hard to be positive of the relative age of the engraving as you sometimes find more than a few things here and there that were engraved or re-engraved long after they were made. Dear Kimo, have added some photos of the tongs. As you can see they are London hallmarked, without date mark. I was explained that the crown should be a monogram ‘F’ ensigned with an Earl’s coronet. Have some doubt also on who is the maker as it could be William Burch (specialized in tongs), Wilkes Booth or even William Bennet, the latter two are not mentioned as tong makers.

Part of the coronet looks like one that would indicate an English Earl, but part of it does not. Specifically it is missing the small crest that rises above the little round shaped tips (pearls) of the five spikes. Perhaps it is just the reflections on the silver that is keeping me from seeing this small crest - is there one there? IP: Logged |

Kimo: crest omitted due to lack of space? IP: Logged |

Anything is possible, but it is kind of an important thing to have omitted. IP: Logged |
