David Shlosberg in his book "Eighteenth Century Silver Tea Tongs" does not list one of the Bennetts as makers of these type sugar tongs, but does list Edward Bayley. The Edward Bayley mark was Gothic script according to Dr. Shlosberg. I should add that my knowledge of this period is very limited, so this may be a false lead. Dear All, David Shlossberg gave me the following reply: My final opinion is that this is the mark of Edward Bennett Jr entered in June 1756 and listed in Grimwade number 541. It isn’t exactly the same but the similarity is too close to ignore. The style of your Tongs is certainly from after 1750 with the quatrefoil upper shafts (very similar to the pair that I illustrate on page 89 of my book) and the bullseye hinge is of this date. So my conclusion is that they were made by Edward Bennett Junior shortly after he entered his mark in 1756. If I may, I shall add them to my records as a newly discovered maker’s mark bringing my total of maker’s marks seen on Tea Tongs to an amazing 356! IP: Logged |

Great story and a great ending. I suspect that Dr. Shlosberg is quite pleased to add another maker. [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 03-27-2018).] IP: Logged |

Another great book for anyone interested in tongs is the book Georgian Silver Sugar Tongs by Graham Hodges. Different time period, but another complete look at an area of silver collecting that I think is under appreciated.
