Hello all. I am posting here with my MIL who found this bird backed dessert spoon in a bundle of thrift shop silver spoons. She is an avid silver collector and when she spotted the bird on the back, we began to hunt online and found out that this could very well be a lovely piece of American silversmithing history. If anyone, who has experience with these spoons, could let us know about the RK stamp or design we would love to hear more. We were both thrilled to see this little spoon that now has a special spot in her home. We ordered a book on bird backed spoons last week and look forward to reading up! [snip...images over sized. Sounds like a great find! I have two bird back spoons myself. What is the title of this book? I may need a copy too! IP: Logged |

Donald Fennimore’s book Flights of Fancy: American Silver Bird-Decorated Spoons is the only book that I know of that is devoted solely to this topic. It is a small, inexpensive book that has great pictures and a list of all known silversmiths that made bird back spoons. Many other books do show occasional picture back spoons made by American silversmiths, but that is not the main topic of these books. Some of the swages used by these early smiths are also shown and that is also interesting. IP: Logged |

Google doesn't catalog every thread (it does many). The built-in forum search might find additional threads. IP: Logged |

Vary your search term as "bird back spoon" will not necessarily get some interesting "picture back spoons". IP: Logged |

Hi. I like your spoon, particularly the nice design of the bird. I am having a hard time seeing an 'RK' marking in the photos, though. Would you be able to take a clear close up photo of this marking and post it for us? Thanks! [This message has been edited by Kimo (edited 04-17-2018).] IP: Logged |

I've been told Silverblossom finds the forums too difficult to post a reply. Silverblossom wants us to delete this thread....and that's not going to happen. Perhaps Silverblossom will try again and post an explanation or better the requested photo (properly). IP: Logged |
