Hello, I'm happy to have stumbled onto this site. I love all kinds of silver pieces, especially unusual teapots. I have one that I can't find any information about! Maybe one of you know! Looking forward to reading more from all of you. Any one have any thought on it? IP: Logged |

Hi Maisymine. This is a very nice looking teapot and I hope you use it regularly. It was made by the Meriden Britannia Company which began operating in 1852 and was merged into the International Silver Company in 1898 but its markings were used by International Silver until the 1930s for marketing purposes. The 1902 marking is not a date of manufacture, that is the pattern number. I believe the 6 is the engraving style number on this pattern. I also have seen the 1/2 engraving style numbers on other pieces of the 1902 pattern. Meriden Britania Company marked objects are either made of Britania metal (a white metal alloy with no actual silver in it, but mostly nickel), or they are made of some base metal alloy with a thin electro-plating on top of silver. From the photo I cannot tell which this one is, though I can say that it is not solid silver. Given the relatively high pattern number and also the overall design my thought is that this teapot would have been made in the early 1900s - perhaps in the 1920s or early 1930s. Do you have any more interesting teapots you might like to share with us? IP: Logged |

By style, with elements like that fancy high handle, the wide flared lip, large finial, and the decorative band, which looks like a classical motif to me (guessing it also has four fancy legs) - your teapot most likely dates to the 1880s, possibly even a little bit earlier. Meriden Britannia produced pieces in both Britannia metal (white metal), which is a pewter alloy containing mostly tin, with small amounts of antimony and copper, and of nickel silver, which is an alloy composed of mostly copper, with nickel and zinc. Your piece would be Britannia metal, if nickel silver, the production code would have been prefixed with a zero. The '1847 Rogers Bros.' trademark belonged to Meriden from 1862 on, so no reason the same decorative band wouldn't be found on pieces bearing that mark. ~Cheryl [This message has been edited by dragonflywink (edited 05-28-2018).] IP: Logged |

Thanks guys! I really appreciate it! It doesn't have legs, just more of a slightly flared bottom. I should have shown that. Oddly enough, it itsnt dinged up! Yay! I should probably clean it & put it to good use!. And Kimo, yes! I have a really odd one that I can't quite figure out! Maybe I'll post st later & let you have a go at it! IP: Logged |

I tried to post another last night but it didn't go thru. Are new member posts held up? It didn't seem like my first one was but I don't think anything in it would have gotten it banned. 😬 Just photos & description of a piece I love.... Maybe I should retry? IP: Logged |
