As a new member and in the spirit of sharing the wonderful aspects and history of sterling silver, I wanted to post an example of an antique sterling silver case that was originally crafted during the Napoleanic Wars (quasi hallmarked as such and there were no "official French hallmarks") and then the case made its way to what is today called the Netherlands "hallmarked as such" and was finally repurposed and crafted into a gift in 1857 "inscribed as such". I think this is a wonderful example of sterling silver's longevity. I uploaded photos showing the hallmark trail ending with the final inscription. I also sent Scott a video link which I assume he will reply with the link so you may hear this play.

Thank you for sharing your treasures. The sound they produce is really amazing. Years ago there was a clock maker in St. Louis that also repaired music boxes. After they were repaired he would record them and give copies of the recordings to his other customers. I have one somewhere in the house and would love to find it and play it again. This clock repairer was from Austria and would always warn me that my French clocks were not up to the quality of other European clocks, but they always ran perfectly after his repair. Do you do your own repair on your music boxes? IP: Logged |

Thanks for sharing, Troy. Before your posting some photos I had not seen these beautiful small music boxes in cases like these. I have learned something new! IP: Logged |
