Hi. Thank you for letting me post. I have six very nice silver knife rests marked reverse 40 (H)(A)(E). The 40 is in a font I associate with Eastern Europe or Russia. They are hand engraved at each end "M" and "S". I have seen 40 used as a mark in Germany for 40 grams of silver per 12 pieces. I have spent many hours trying to pin these down without success. Thank you for any assistance you can provide.

My name is Allen L. Cannon. I live in Miami Florida. I am an attorney. I buy and sell antique silver and plate. I successfully research most of my items. These knife rests have me stumped. Looking forward to the answer. Thanks! IP: Logged |

Is this business research? IP: Logged |

quote: These are knife rests that have me stumped. I have spent hours at all the silver sites and on Face Book pages trying to figure them out. I have visited this forum many times and saw people here who were very knowledgeable and helpful. To the extent this is "business research" I have spent many hours just to satisfy my personal curiosity. Here are more photo; the intricate hand engraved S and M initials on each end and some flaking on one near the mark evidencing the fact they are plated.

I looked through my books and can't find anything... my guess is plate. H A E - could that be something like Hall And Elkington or another company? Wild guess. IP: Logged |

Allen, hi. I am guessing here but I think you hit on it, the 40 is about the plating, since there is no 800 or Loth mark. The chance of finding anything out about plated ware is slim. IP: Logged |

quote: They are DEFINITELY plate. But they are incredibly well made and attractive. I have spent enough time running down rabbit holes to know the chance of finding info on these is slim. That is why I finally decided to enlist the experts here. If no one here knows I feel better about my own research abilities. Thank you for allowing me to post. IP: Logged |

They are attractive but the problem with plate is that there is so much and at the same time less documentation because few have made the effort like they have with sterling to record the companies. That means that few here have any info, especially if it’s continental. There are 2 regulars who may be able to help if they see the post both are familiar with that part of the world but I’m not sure they can help either. IP: Logged |
