I recently came across this 3 1/2" card case and I'm thinking it's US made, last quarter of the 19th C. The only mark I could find is "sterling" (no maker's mark). I have no idea if the engraving is fantasy or factual. Has anyone encountered this engraving on a makers marked piece (possibly another card case)? It's a long shot but worth throwing out there. Scroll down this thread--about Leonard & Wilson card cases--to the (currently) last case shown. It looks similar, doesn't it? I never got a definitive ID for that building, thought it has been suggested that it might be part of the Fairmont Waterworks in Philadelphia. You might research Leonard & Wilson's card cases and see if you can find a marked one with a similar shape and engraved scene. Most of their cases are stamped with architectural scenes or floral decoration, like the ones in my thread, but a few have engine-turned decoration and engraving like on your card case, so it's not impossible it's by them. Or maybe it's something else entirely! Good luck, and let use know what you discover. IP: Logged |

Thanks Polly for the heads up, super collection of card cases you've put together! I agree there are similarities between the two designs, one often finds the answer when least expected, this could be one of those cases... IP: Logged |
