I picked up this English sterling box this weekend and have no idea of its intended use. My only thought was possibly for toothpicks. As can be seen in the pictures, it's double hinged and the spine is hollow. The interior is gilt and one side is a bit deeper than the other, the edge near the hinge on both sides are very shallow. Dimensions are 2 3/4", 1 1/2", 3/8", weight is 93 grams, maker is Harrison Brothers & Howson, Sheffield 1881. Any thoughts on the intended use? IP: Logged |

Perhaps Golf tees and scoring pencils?

Scott, I never thought about a sporting angle. I thought about snuff but the box doesn't snap shut for containment and the edge along the hinge on both sides isn't high enough to contain powdery substances. IP: Logged |

I think the middle section is the key to this object. My first impulse was that it was a card holder, but the dimensions are probably too small (although Victorian calling cards were different dimensions depending on gender and marital status), so I think the stamp holder angle is probably closer to the truth, although since writing a letter was a much more cumbersome process back then, I doubt that it was truly for stamps, as I've only ever seen desktop/laptop stamp cases. (I love inkwells and dip/fountain pens, too, so have spent a lot of time with those for actual use.) It is clear to me that the middle section is intended to hold something "vertically", and the outer "wings" are then closed protectively over that thing. Perhaps an Aide de Memoire for a gentleman? I'll keep thinking & looking. Lycoris >^..^< IP: Logged |
