Greetings! I'm a new member joining for a specific quest--to find out about some spoons given to me. An internet search did not yield anything so I thought insightful folks here might know something. So, my first question is, do I post in this New Member forum or look for the category I think is most fitting? Thanks! IP: Logged |

Here in the new member forum. Access to the other fora is limited to those who have been here a while and been granted permission to post in them. Could you please do a short introduction of yourself and why you are asking about your spoons? Before posting your question have you had a chance to search the forum yet? Sometimes there are already answers from earlier threads. Also, when you post your questions, clear photos - both overall and any markings are essential. Welcome to the Forum! IP: Logged |

Thanks for your reply! My intro: I'm just a middle aged housewife with no particular interest in actively collecting silver. I acquired some silverplate in a Goodwill pile my friend was getting rid of. I did search the forums for my question--and the exact question came up once before--but that was awhile ago and I was curious if anyone had discovered any additional information. I haven't had time to take pictures but the spoons in question are 8-1/4" long, lightweight, and probably German silver. The markings on the back say 'Rogers Bro'on one line and 'Sold in Albata' on the line underneath. Previous speculation was that they were salesman samples. They don't seem to be very common judging from my search efforts. IP: Logged |

I look forward to seeing photos, especially closeups of the markings. My first thought is that the markings might be a bit hard to read and could be something like 'Rogers Bros' and 'solid alpaca'. Otherwise they make little sense. If they do read something like what I have suggested then there would be no silver at all in them as alpaca or sometimes spelled alpacca is the marketing name used for an alloy of copper, nickel, zinc and tin that some makers sometimes used in their least expensive tableware lines. Also, from what you have described I am not hearing anything that might suggest they could be "salesman's samples" or anything uncommon. Sharp, closeup photos should let us help you clear up what the markings are. IP: Logged |

Holy cow, I am having a bit of trouble posting pictures and am too tired to try to figure it out tonight. I do not think there is any silver in them. I do believe they say what I stated although there is some symbol after the 'Bros' that I cannot make out. Definitely say 'Sold in Albata'--there is definite spacing between the words. I will keep trying on getting pictures posted at a later date. Thanks!!!!! IP: Logged |
