Hello, does anyone know any information about Browne of Browne & Spaulding in NY ~1864 - 1871? Henry Abiram Spaulding's subsequent career in Paris working with Tiffany and later in Chicago is well documented. I haven't found anything about Browne. Thanks! IP: Logged |

In looking through the wonderful link American Silversmiths there is an entry for Henry Abiram Spaulding depicting a trade card c. 1870 for Browne and Spaulding "Late With Ball, Black & Co." that lists Alfred L. Browne. Mr. Browne does not have his own entry. Does anyone know any information about Alfred L. Browne? Thanks! [This message has been edited by Scott Martin (edited 09-02-2020).] IP: Logged |

Alfred L Browne is listed in the 1850 US Federal Census in the District of Charleston, SC aged 28 years, a merchant. In the same boarding as his living with her family is a 10 year old Sarah Gleason who is Alfred's future wife. Alfred L Brown aged 31 years, living in Charleston with the occupation watchmaker and from Dublin, Ireland was admitted (naturalized) in 1855. In the 1860 US Federal Census Alfred is listed in New York, New York as a merchant and again his future wife Sarah is living in the same boarding house as his with her family. His partnership with Spaulding is recorded in Directory entries in the '60's. In the 1870 US Federal Census Alfred is listed as a jeweller in New York City with his wife Sarah, children and mother in law Elizabeth Gleason. In the 1880 US Federal Census Alfred is listed as a clerk living in Jersey City, New Jersey with his family. Alfred is listed as a foreman in the 1883 Jersey City Directory. Alfred and family continue to be listed in Jersey City in the 1885 New Jersey State Census. There is no occupation information shown in this census. I suspect he died in New Jersey sometime after 1890, and that's all I have for now. IP: Logged |

Thanks, bascall! I'm impressed at the detail you discovered! So Spaulding was about 15 years younger than Browne. Their mark doesn't show up often but the partnership produced some nice aesthetic pieces. IP: Logged |

One more small piece of information. On July 2, 1853 the Hartford (Connecticut) Times reported that Alfred L Browne married Annie M Gleason on June 28 in Charleston, SC. No other information is given with this excerpt, but I believe Alfred married Sarah's older sister first, and then soon after Annie past away he married Sarah because an Annie M Browne of South Carolina died from peritonitis in 1860 in New York City. Amazing! Nothing was readily available on Alfred L Browne and you have mapped out a timeline, bascall! Like a time machine. Wonder if Annie's peritonitis was a complication of ruptured appendicitis. [This message has been edited by Silverpath (edited 09-29-2020).] IP: Logged |
